Lazio Star Romagnoli’s Future Hangs in the Balance as Atalanta Emerges as a Viable Option

FolioPitch.com – 12 August 2026 | Alessio Romagnoli‘s future with Lazio continues to be shrouded in uncertainty, with the Italian defender weighing up a potential switch to Atalanta as his proposed move to Al-Sadd stalls.

The 29-year-old centre-back has been a key player for the Biancocelesti in recent seasons, but his desire to leave the club has grown stronger in recent months. According to reports, Romagnoli’s preferred destination had been Qatar, where he would have joined Al-Sadd and secured a lucrative contract, sparing him the prospect of facing his boyhood club as an opponent.

However, the deal with Al-Sadd has hit a roadblock, with the Qatari side repeatedly asking Romagnoli to wait. With the player’s contract timeline set to expire soon, a resolution is expected in the coming days.

As the situation continues to unfold, Atalanta has emerged as a viable option for Romagnoli. The Bergamo-based club is said to be keen on signing the defender, who would reunite with his former Lazio coach Maurizio Sarri. The two have a strong working relationship, having worked together during their time at Lazio, and Sarri is said to be personally leading the efforts to convince Romagnoli to join Atalanta.

However, there are several hurdles that need to be overcome before the deal can be completed. Atalanta must first offload some defenders to lighten the department, and Romagnoli must also make a decision on his future. Despite his exemplary conduct since returning to the group, Romagnoli’s relationship with Lazio has become strained, and he is willing to join a direct rival, Atalanta, just to leave the club.

The situation raises questions about the impact on Lazio’s squad dynamics and the potential consequences of Romagnoli’s departure. The defender has been a key player for the club, and his loss would be felt in the dressing room.

The coming days will be crucial in determining Romagnoli’s future, as he weighs up his options and considers a potential move to Atalanta. The Italian defender’s future hangs in the balance, and only time will tell if he will ultimately decide to join the Bergamo-based club.
