Luca Pellegrini Reinstated in Lazio Squad After Gattuso’s Push

FolioPitch.com – 16 October 2026 | Luca Pellegrini Reinstated in Lazio Squad has become the talk of the Italian capital after manager Gennaro Gattuso successfully convinced the club’s hierarchy to add the left-back to the Serie A list. The decision ends weeks of uncertainty surrounding the 27-year-old defender, who had been frozen out at the start of the season. According to reports, Gattuso was eager to bring Pellegrini back into the fold, while the directors had reservations due to financial considerations. Ultimately, the coach’s will prevailed, and Luca Pellegrini Reinstated in Lazio Squad was confirmed on Friday afternoon.

Background: Why Pellegrini Was Left Out

At the beginning of the campaign, Lazio made the surprising decision to omit both Luca Pellegrini and defender Patric from their Serie A squad list. The club opted to leave a few slots open for potential new arrivals, but only Diogo Leite joined afterwards, leaving two available spots. Patric has since been sold to Al-Ittifaq, further reducing defensive options. Gattuso, known for his strong man-management, insisted that leaving a senior player like Pellegrini out of the squad was not ideal. He even fielded him in two international-break friendlies against Arezzo and Juve Stabia to keep him match-fit and demonstrate his faith in the player.

Gattuso’s Influence and Pellegrini’s Situation

The 27-year-old left-back might be third choice behind the reinvigorated Nuno Tavares and summer signing Alfonso Pedraza, but Gattuso values his experience and professionalism. The coach made it clear that he wanted Pellegrini reinstated, and his persistence paid off. According to Il Corriere dello Sport, Pellegrini was anxiously awaiting the final decision, which was expected before Sunday’s game against his former employers, Juventus. The Aquile travel to Turin on Saturday, so the decision needed to be made beforehand. With Luca Pellegrini Reinstated in Lazio Squad, he is now expected to be on the bench at the Allianz Stadium.

Financial Hurdles and Director Reservations

Il Messaggero revealed that Lazio’s directors were reluctant to add Pellegrini to the squad due to his hefty salary and bonus structure. The Roman full-back earns a yearly net salary of €1.9 million, and every five appearances—even for a minute—trigger a €100,000 bonus, with a maximum of €500,000. The club hierarchy preferred to keep him out to avoid additional costs, especially with the risk of another transfer ban looming. However, Gattuso’s insistence and the need for squad depth ultimately swayed the decision. Luca Pellegrini Reinstated in Lazio Squad means the club will now bear those financial implications, but the coach’s sporting vision took precedence.

Impact on the Squad and Future

Pellegrini’s reinstatement provides Gattuso with more options at left-back, though he remains behind Tavares and Pedraza in the pecking order. The Italian defender’s contract expires at the end of the season, and a January departure could still be on the cards. Nevertheless, for now, he will travel with the team to Turin and could feature against Juventus. The decision to reinstate him also sends a message that Gattuso’s voice carries weight in the club’s decision-making process. It remains to be seen if Pellegrini will earn enough appearances to trigger his bonuses, but his immediate future is now clearer.

Conclusion

Luca Pellegrini Reinstated in Lazio Squad marks a significant victory for Gennaro Gattuso, who fought to keep a senior player involved despite financial concerns from the board. While the left-back may still leave in January or at the end of the season, his return to the squad list provides immediate depth and morale boost. The coming weeks will reveal whether Pellegrini can force his way into Gattuso’s plans on the pitch, but for now, he can focus on helping Lazio achieve their objectives. The saga highlights the ongoing tension between sporting ambitions and financial prudence at the Stadio Olimpico.
