Ellertsson Stunner Sinks Venezia as Genoa Claim Vital Relegation Win

FolioPitch.com – 25 October 2026 | In a tense Serie A relegation six-pointer at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, Genoa secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Venezia, thanks to a moment of brilliance from former Venezia midfielder Mikael Ellertsson. The match, which saw Serie A Genoa 1-0 Venezia Ellertsson breaks his old club, was decided by a stunning 25th-minute strike from the Icelandic international, who refused to celebrate out of respect for his former employers.

The game was a classic relegation dogfight, with both sides desperate for points. Genoa, under pressure to climb away from the drop zone, started brightly and took the game to their visitors. The home side’s early pressure paid off when Ellertsson picked up the ball outside the area, took a touch, and unleashed a ferocious left-footed drive into the near top corner, leaving goalkeeper Filip Stankovic with no chance. The goal was a testament to Ellertsson’s quality and proved to be the decisive moment in a fiercely contested encounter.

Venezia, who had appointed Davide Nicola as their new head coach just days earlier, were looking to build on their shock 1-0 win over Napoli. However, they struggled to find their rhythm against a resolute Genoa defense. Despite enjoying 55% possession and registering 19 shots, the visitors lacked a cutting edge in front of goal. Their best chances fell to John Yeboah and Akor Adams, but Genoa goalkeeper Justin Bijlow was in inspired form, making several crucial saves to preserve his team’s lead.

The second half saw Venezia push harder for an equalizer, with Nicola making attacking substitutions. However, Genoa’s defense, marshaled by the experienced Johan Vásquez and Leo Östigard, held firm. The home side also had chances to extend their lead through Junior Messias and substitute Lorenzo Colombo, but they were unable to find the net. The match ended with Venezia frustrated and Genoa celebrating a vital three points.

This Serie A Genoa 1-0 Venezia Ellertsson breaks his old club result is a significant boost for Genoa’s survival hopes. The win lifts them above their opponents in the table and gives them a psychological edge in the battle against relegation. For Venezia, it’s a missed opportunity to build momentum under their new coach, and they remain in deep trouble at the bottom of the standings.

The match also highlighted the importance of Ellertsson to Genoa’s cause. The midfielder, who joined from Venezia in the summer, has now scored crucial goals for his new club. His decision not to celebrate against his former team was a classy gesture that was appreciated by the Venezia fans, who applauded him as he was substituted in the second half.

In conclusion, the Serie A Genoa 1-0 Venezia Ellertsson breaks his old club match will be remembered for Ellertsson’s stunning goal and the intense relegation battle. Genoa’s victory, their second in three games, suggests they have turned a corner under their coach. Venezia, on the other hand, face an uphill struggle to avoid an immediate return to Serie B. With the season still young, both teams will need to build on this performance, but for now, it is Genoa who can enjoy the bragging rights in this crucial relegation clash.
