Gattuso Takes the Helm: Lazio Officially Appoint World Cup Winner as New Head Coach

FolioPitch.com – 26 June 2026 | In a move that has been anticipated for weeks, Official Lazio Finally Announce Gennaro Gattuso as New Head Coach, bringing an end to the speculation surrounding the Biancocelesti’s managerial vacancy. The announcement, made on the club’s official website, confirms that the former AC Milan and Napoli boss has signed a contract to lead the first team into the upcoming season.

The decision comes after a turbulent campaign that saw Maurizio Sarri part ways with the club following constant clashes with president Claudio Lotito. Sarri’s departure was inevitable, and he has since taken over at Atalanta. Meanwhile, Gattuso had already been working at the Formello training ground for several weeks, planning the squad’s future alongside Lotito and sporting director Angelo Fabiani. The delay in the official statement had fueled rumors, but Official Lazio Finally Announce Gennaro Gattuso as New Head Coach, putting an end to the uncertainty.

Gattuso, 48, brings a wealth of experience despite a mixed managerial record. As a player, he won two Champions League titles with AC Milan and the 2006 World Cup with Italy. However, his coaching career has been less glittering, with his only major trophy being the Coppa Italia won with Napoli in 2020. His most recent stint was with the Italian national team, where he failed to qualify for the World Cup after a playoff defeat to Bosnia. Now, he returns to club football with a point to prove.

The contract is believed to be a one-year deal with an option for a second, with Gattuso earning approximately €1.5 million per season. The terms reflect Lazio’s financial constraints, as the club faces stern economic challenges. Nevertheless, the appointment signals a new direction for the Roman side, which struggled to compete in Serie A and Europe last season.

Gattuso’s first task will be to stabilize the squad and implement his trademark high-energy style. Known for his combative nature as a player, he demands intensity and discipline from his teams. However, his tactical flexibility has been questioned, and he will need to adapt quickly to Lazio’s strengths. The squad features talents like Ciro Immobile and Sergej Milinković-Savić, but with potential departures, Gattuso faces a rebuilding job.

The official statement from SS Lazio SpA read: “The Club warmly welcomes its new manager and is confident that his experience, professionalism, and determination will contribute to achieving the Club’s sporting objectives.” While the note lacked detail, it confirms that Official Lazio Finally Announce Gennaro Gattuso as New Head Coach after weeks of behind-the-scenes negotiations.

Fans have mixed feelings about the appointment. Some remember Gattuso’s successful playing career and his passionate touchline demeanor, while others recall his struggles at Valencia and Marseille. Nonetheless, there is a sense that a fresh start is needed after Sarri’s tumultuous reign. The new coach will have the chance to silence critics starting from pre-season.

As Lazio prepares for the 2026-27 campaign, all eyes are on Gattuso to replicate his Coppa Italia-winning formula. The club’s financial limitations mean he must rely on youth development and shrewd transfers. With Official Lazio Finally Announce Gennaro Gattuso as New Head Coach, the focus now shifts to the transfer market and pre-season training. The journey begins now for the World Cup winner turned coach.
