Lazio Goalkeeper Promotion: Young Renzetti Steps Up as Furlanetto Undergoes ACL Surgery

FolioPitch.com – 01 July 2026 | In a significant reshuffle of Lazio’s goalkeeping department, the club has confirmed that Young Lazio Goalkeeper Set for Promotion as Furlanetto Undergoes ACL Surgery is the latest development. Following season-ending surgery for Alessio Furlanetto, the Biancocelesti are promoting 20-year-old Davide Renzetti from the youth ranks to the first team.

The goalkeeper carousel at Lazio has been spinning rapidly this summer. With first-choice Ivan Provedel on the verge of a move to Inter Milan, the club is reorganizing its options between the posts. Provedel, 32, has been the mainstay for the past four seasons. His departure is expected to elevate Christos Mandas to the starting role, despite the Greek goalkeeper’s underwhelming loan spell at Bournemouth. Mandas has the full support of head coach Gennaro Gattuso. Meanwhile, Edoardo Motta, who impressed during Provedel’s injury layoff, is slated to serve as Mandas’ backup.

Originally, Lazio planned to keep Furlanetto as the third-choice goalkeeper behind Mandas and Motta. The 24-year-old Italian made two appearances at the end of the 2025-26 season due to an injury crisis and performed admirably. However, a training injury has derailed those plans. On Wednesday, Lazio released a statement confirming that Furlanetto underwent successful arthroscopic reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. The surgery was performed by Professor Francesco Franceschi’s team at San Pietro Fatebenefratelli Hospital, with no meniscus damage found. Furlanetto will begin rehabilitation immediately at the Lazio Lab in Formello.

This injury has forced Lazio to revisit their depth chart. The club’s solution is to promote Davide Renzetti, a product of the Lazio youth system. Renzetti spent last season on loan at Bra in Serie C, where he made 24 appearances, conceding 34 goals and keeping five clean sheets. The young Roman’s contract with Lazio runs for another year. With Furlanetto sidelined for several months, Renzetti is expected to train with the first team and provide cover. The move highlights Lazio’s commitment to developing homegrown talent, especially in a position that is undergoing transformation.

The promotion of Renzetti is a direct consequence of the Young Lazio Goalkeeper Set for Promotion as Furlanetto Undergoes ACL Surgery narrative. It also underscores the club’s need to balance experience with youth in a crucial position. Mandas, at 23, is still relatively young but has international experience. Motta, 25, has shown promise. Renzetti, at 20, adds another layer of youth to the goalkeeping corps. The decision to promote from within rather than seek an external replacement reflects trust in the academy’s output.

The Young Lazio Goalkeeper Set for Promotion as Furlanetto Undergoes ACL Surgery news has been well-received by fans who appreciate club-grown talent. Renzetti’s performances in Serie C, though not spectacular, provided a solid foundation. His familiarity with the club’s culture and training methods could ease his transition. Lazio’s coaching staff will work closely with him to ensure he is ready if called upon.

Looking ahead, Lazio’s goalkeeping situation remains fluid. The sale of Provedel is expected to be finalized soon, bringing in funds that could be reinvested elsewhere. Mandas will likely be the number one, with Motta as his deputy and Renzetti as the third choice. Furlanetto’s recovery timeline is uncertain, but ACL surgeries typically require six to nine months. He may miss the entire 2026-27 season, making Renzetti’s promotion even more critical for depth.

In conclusion, the Young Lazio Goalkeeper Set for Promotion as Furlanetto Undergoes ACL Surgery marks a pivotal moment for Lazio’s squad planning. It signals a shift toward youth and a reliance on internal resources. While the immediate impact may be limited—Renzetti is unlikely to start matches unless injuries strike—the long-term benefits could be significant. Lazio is breeding a new generation of goalkeepers, and Renzetti’s promotion is the first step. For now, all eyes will be on Mandas to lead the line, but the story of Lazio’s young shot-stopper is just beginning.
