Lazio Swiftly Move for Dominguez as Gila Departs for Milan

FolioPitch.com – 09 July 2026 | Lazio push for former Barcelona defender Dominguez as Gila heads to Milan, with the Serie A club wasting no time in securing a replacement for the outgoing Mario Gila. According to Sky Sport, Lazio sporting director Angelo Fabiani has traveled to Croatia to negotiate with Dinamo Zagreb over the transfer of Sergi Dominguez, a 21-year-old centre-back who rose through Barcelona’s La Masia academy.

The Lazio push for former Barcelona defender Dominguez as Gila heads to Milan comes after the Italian club agreed to sell Gila to AC Milan. Gila, a Spanish defender himself, has been a key figure in Lazio’s backline, but his departure has opened the door for a younger, long-term successor. Dominguez, who left Barcelona for Dinamo Zagreb last summer, has quickly made a name for himself in Croatian football, playing a pivotal role in the club’s domestic double. His performances have attracted interest from across Europe, but Lazio appear to be at the forefront of the race.

Dinamo Zagreb values Dominguez at €12 million, a figure Lazio hopes to meet through a structure of add-ons and bonuses. Fabiani’s personal trip to Croatia underscores the urgency behind the Lazio push for former Barcelona defender Dominguez as Gila heads to Milan. New head coach Gennaro Gattuso has identified Dominguez as a priority reinforcement for his defensive line, seeking a player who can fit his tactical system immediately while also offering potential for growth.

Dominguez’s journey from Barcelona to Dinamo Zagreb was initially seen as a step down, but he has proven his critics wrong. His composure on the ball, aerial ability, and reading of the game have drawn comparisons to some of La Masia’s finest graduates. Barcelona, which inserted a sell-on clause in his transfer to Dinamo, stands to profit from any future sale, adding another layer of intrigue to the negotiations.

For Lazio, the Lazio push for former Barcelona defender Dominguez as Gila heads to Milan represents a strategic move to reinvest the proceeds from Gila’s transfer into a younger, cheaper alternative. Gila’s move to Milan is reportedly worth around €15 million, giving Lazio the financial flexibility to pursue Dominguez without breaking the bank. The club’s hierarchy is confident that Dominguez can adapt quickly to Serie A, given his technical background and physical attributes.

If the deal goes through, Dominguez will join a Lazio squad that is undergoing a transitional phase under Gattuso. The coach has emphasized the need for defensive solidity, and Dominguez’s arrival could be a cornerstone of that philosophy. Meanwhile, Gila will look to establish himself at Milan, where he will compete for a starting spot alongside the likes of Fikayo Tomori and Malick Thiaw.

As the transfer window heats up, the Lazio push for former Barcelona defender Dominguez as Gila heads to Milan highlights the club’s aggressive approach to squad building. With Fabiani leading the charge, Lazio fans can expect swift progress on this front. The coming days will be crucial as both clubs negotiate the final terms. Should Fabiani succeed in bridging the gap between Lazio’s offer and Dinamo’s valuation, Lazio will have turned one Spanish centre-back’s departure into the arrival of another promising talent.
