Maldini’s Appointment as Italy Technical Director: Costacurta Says It’s More Important Than Choosing New Coach

FolioPitch.com – 12 July 2026 | In a move that has sent ripples through Italian football, Paolo Maldini has been appointed as the new technical director of the Italy national team. Former teammate Alessandro Costacurta has boldly declared that the Costacurta Maldini more important choice for Italy than new coach, emphasizing the profound impact Maldini can have on the Azzurri‘s future. The decision, confirmed by FIGC President Giovanni Malagò, ends weeks of speculation and positions Maldini as the central figure in reshaping Italy’s footballing identity.

Costacurta, a legendary defender in his own right, shared his insights with Sky Sport Italia, stating, “This is great news for Italian football, because we have brought in one of the most illuminated and sincere people in the sport.” He went on to argue that the Costacurta Maldini more important choice for Italy than new coach, as Maldini’s vision and leadership will guide the selection of the next manager and set the tactical and cultural direction for the team. “Malagò made the best possible choice. In fact, picking Maldini is perhaps more important than choosing the new coach,” Costacurta added.

The appointment of Maldini comes at a critical juncture for Italy, who missed the 2022 World Cup and are in the midst of rebuilding. Maldini, renowned for his illustrious playing career at AC Milan and his subsequent roles as technical director and sporting director at the club, brings a wealth of experience. His task will be to oversee the technical aspects of the Nazionale, from youth development to senior team tactics, and ultimately to select the new head coach after the departure of Roberto Mancini.

A surprising element of the announcement was the inclusion of Brazilian Leonardo as a consultant, reuniting the duo who worked together at AC Milan. Costacurta highlighted their complementary styles: “They have different characteristics. Leo is more of a dreamer, a visionary, whereas Paolo is more practical, looks to his knowledge and instinct.” Despite their differences, Costacurta noted that they listen to each other and always find common solutions. Leonardo, who has held various roles in Italy and at Paris Saint-Germain, will provide strategic advice to Maldini.

The Costacurta Maldini more important choice for Italy than new coach perspective underscores the belief that Maldini’s long-term influence will outweigh any single managerial appointment. With his deep understanding of Italian football and his ability to nurture talent, Maldini is expected to restore the Azzurri’s competitive edge. His reputation precedes him—both as a player who won everything and as an executive who helped build Milan’s recent success, including the 2022 Scudetto.

Italian football has been yearning for stability and a clear direction. The arrival of Maldini, coupled with the guidance of Leonardo, offers a blend of pragmatism and creativity. Costacurta’s assertion that the Costacurta Maldini more important choice for Italy than new coach resonates with many fans and pundits who see this as a foundational move. While the next coach will be crucial, the technical director sets the broader strategy, and Maldini’s appointment signals a commitment to excellence.

In conclusion, Paolo Maldini’s new role as technical director of the Italy national team represents a landmark moment for Italian football. As Costacurta emphasized, the importance of this choice cannot be overstated. It is a decision that prioritizes long-term vision over short-term fixes, and it places the future of the Azzurri in the hands of a true legend. The coming months will reveal how Maldini and his team reshape the Nazionale, but the foundation has been set with a choice that many believe is indeed more important than the coach’s appointment.
