Lazio Target Benfica Youngster Franjo Ivanovic in Striker Hunt

FolioPitch.com – 29 July 2026 | Lazio Make a Move for Young Benfica Striker Franjo Ivanovic as the club intensifies its search for a reliable goal-scorer ahead of the new season. According to Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla, the Biancocelesti have made significant progress in their pursuit of the Croatian striker, who is reportedly open to leaving the Portuguese giants this summer. However, Ivanovic is determined to join a club where he can secure regular playing time, a factor that Lazio are keen to guarantee.

The move comes as no surprise given Lazio’s struggles in front of goal last season. The Rome-based side managed just 41 goals in 38 Serie A matches, a tally that highlighted their need for a clinical finisher. Manager Gennaro Gattuso had identified AC Milan’s Santiago Gimenez as his dream target, but the deal remains complicated due to Lazio’s precarious financial situation. Other names such as West Ham’s Niclas Fullkrug, Burnley’s Armando Broja, Fiorentina’s Roberto Piccoli, Sassuolo’s Andrea Pinamonti, and Fluminense’s John Kennedy have all been linked, but none have materialized into a concrete signing.

Now, Lazio Make a Move for Young Benfica Striker Franjo Ivanovic, a 22-year-old who has already built an impressive resume. Born in Schwaz, Austria, Ivanovic began his youth career in Germany, joining Lowhald’s academy in 2015 before moving to Augsburg. He rose through the ranks but was released in 2023, prompting a move to HNK Rijeka in Croatia. A year later, he transferred to Union Saint-Gilloise in Belgium, where he truly blossomed. In 47 appearances for the Belgian side, Ivanovic netted 21 goals and provided seven assists, earning him a €23 million transfer to Benfica in the summer of 2025.

At Benfica, Ivanovic worked under Jose Mourinho but failed to nail down a regular starting spot. Despite this, he still made 42 appearances across all competitions last season, scoring eight goals and providing three assists. He has also earned nine senior caps for Croatia, scoring two international goals. Lazio’s interest in Ivanovic is part of a broader strategy to inject youth and energy into their attack. The club has requested an initial loan deal, though it remains to be seen whether Benfica will agree to a temporary arrangement.

Lazio Make a Move for Young Benfica Striker Ivanovic as a potential solution to their goal-scoring woes. The Croatian’s versatility and experience in multiple leagues make him an attractive option. His ability to play as a lone striker or in a two-man attack could provide Gattuso with tactical flexibility. Moreover, his desire for playing time aligns perfectly with Lazio’s need for a starting-caliber forward.

The Biancocelesti’s pursuit of Ivanovic underscores their commitment to strengthening the squad despite financial constraints. While the deal is not yet finalized, the club’s proactive approach signals a clear intent to address their most glaring weakness. If successful, Ivanovic could be the key to unlocking Lazio’s potential in the upcoming campaign.

In conclusion, Lazio Make a Move for Young Benfica Striker Franjo Ivanovic, reflecting their urgent need for a proven goal-scorer. The Croatian international possesses the talent and ambition to thrive in Serie A, and his arrival could be a game-changer for the Aquile. As the transfer window progresses, all eyes will be on the negotiations between Lazio and Benfica to see if this promising move comes to fruition.
