Amorim’s Squad Vision: Modric Renewal Hinges on Experience and Youth Balance

FolioPitch.com – 30 July 2026 | Ruben Amorim gives insight into squad vision in explanation of Modric renewal It depends. The AC Milan head coach addressed the media during the team’s pre-season tour in Perth, clarifying how veteran midfielder Luka Modric fits into his plans following the Croatian’s one-year contract extension.

Amorim, who succeeded Massimiliano Allegri, emphasized that Modric’s role will be tailored based on the player’s physical condition and the demands of the season. “It depends on the player’s desire,” Amorim stated. “From what I saw last season, he can still play at a very high level. He did very well, not only during the season, but also at the World Cup.” The 41-year-old Modric, who recently completed his fifth World Cup, will not be expected to start as many games as last season, but his experience remains invaluable.

The coach’s comments underscore his broader squad vision. Amorim gives insight into squad vision in explanation of Modric renewal It depends—not just on Modric’s fitness, but on the need to blend youthful energy with seasoned leadership. “We’re bringing in a lot of young players, and for a young player to be successful, we also need to surround him with experienced players,” Amorim explained. “That’s the main goal.” This philosophy aligns with Milan’s recent transfer strategy, which has seen an influx of promising talents alongside veterans like Modric.

Amorim highlighted how Modric’s football intelligence will compensate for any decline in pace. “Sometimes it’s not how fast you run that matters, but how fast you think. And he’s really good at that,” he said. The Portuguese manager plans to build a possession-based system, and Modric’s ability to control tempo and distribute accurately makes him a key cog. “If there’s anyone in the world who can really help with possession, it’s Luka,” Amorim added.

The renewal was finalized despite initial uncertainty following the departures of Allegri and sporting director Igli Tare. Modric’s one-year deal signals the club’s commitment to retaining core figures while transitioning to a younger squad. When asked about Modric’s playing time in pre-season friendlies, Amorim remained cautious. “Some players returning from the World Cup will be arriving here in Perth. It’s hard to say whether Modric will play: the idea is for him to play friendlies here, but you never know,” he said. The priority is preparing for the season opener, but the coach hopes to showcase his star players to the Australian fans.

Amorim concluded by expressing excitement about the squad’s potential. “We’re talking about Milan: I think anyone in the world wants to play for a club like ours, with our history. Now we have to take a step forward, play better, and play well to reach a different level.” He emphasized that while Modric is a focal point, the team boasts other top-class players and young talents with enormous potential. “I’m really excited for next season,” he said.

In summary, Amorim gives insight into squad vision in explanation of Modric renewal It depends, but the message is clear: Modric remains a vital piece, not just for his on-field contributions, but for mentoring the next generation. The blend of experience and youth is central to Milan’s resurgence under the new manager.
