To understand Amorim’s methods, one must examine his Sporting blueprint. The 3-4-2-1 system features:

• Build-up phase: Three center-backs spread wide, with the goalkeeper participating. The double pivot drops to create a 3-2-5 shape.
• Midfield control: The two central midfielders (often a box-to-box and a deep-lying playmaker) dictate tempo.
• Attacking rotations: The two attacking midfielders drift into half-spaces, while the striker occupies center-backs.

At Manchester United, this structure struggled due to a lack of natural wing-backs and defensive midfielders.
