Lazio Turn to Belgian Defender as Romagnoli’s Future Remains Uncertain

FolioPitch.com – 05 August 2026 | Lazio have set their sights on Standard Liege centre-back Ibe Hautekiet as they continue to revamp their defensive line. The move comes after the Biancocelesti missed out on two previous targets, Sergio Dominguez and Noah Markmann.

The Roman club’s defensive woes began with the departure of Mario Gila to AC Milan, and they have since signed Danilho Doekhi on a free transfer. However, with Alessio Romagnoli‘s future still uncertain due to bureaucratic hurdles, Lazio are looking to reinforce their backline.

The Aquile had identified Sergio Dominguez as their primary target, but they were unable to agree on a transfer fee with Dinamo Zagreb. They then turned their attention to Noah Markmann, but the young Dane and his family refused to move.

According to Il Corriere dello Sport, Lazio have now set their sights on Ibe Hautekiet, a 24-year-old Belgian defender who has been at Standard Liege since 2023. The player is reportedly enticed by the opportunity to play for the Italian capital side, but the main stumbling block is reaching an agreement on the transfer formula.

Lazio are offering a loan with an option to buy, but Standard Liege are unwilling to accept what they consider to be unfavourable terms. The Belgians are only willing to permanently sell the defender, who has a contract until June 2029.

Hautekiet has a promising background, having played for Zulte and Club Brugge before joining Standard Liege. He has made 55 appearances in the Belgian top flight, scoring two goals and providing an assist. Transfermarkt estimates his value at £4 million.

Lazio’s pursuit of Hautekiet is the latest development in their efforts to strengthen their defensive line. The club’s management is aware of the importance of securing a reliable centre-back, and they are willing to do whatever it takes to make it happen.

As the transfer window draws to a close, Lazio fans will be eagerly waiting to see if the club can finally secure the services of Hautekiet. Will the Biancocelesti be able to agree on a transfer formula with Standard Liege, or will they miss out on another target?

Only time will tell, but one thing is certain: Lazio’s defensive line will be under the spotlight for the rest of the summer. And with Hautekiet on the radar, the Biancocelesti are not giving up on their quest for a reliable centre-back.

In conclusion, Lazio’s pursuit of Ibe Hautekiet is the latest chapter in their ongoing efforts to revamp their defensive line. With Romagnoli’s future still uncertain, the club’s management is aware of the importance of securing a reliable centre-back.
