FolioPitch.com – 14 August 2026 | Alessandro Costacurta, a former Milan defender and one of the most decorated players in the club’s history, has come out in defense of Mike Maignan’s extended vacation, but has also suggested that the French goalkeeper may not be the best man to lead the team.
Costacurta, who ranks third all-time in appearances for Milan behind only Paolo Maldini and Franco Baresi, was speaking at the fifth annual ‘Ponte di Legno Culture and Sentiment Awards’ in Ponte di Legno, where he received an award for his contributions to the club.
When asked about Maignan’s decision to extend his vacation by four days, Costacurta said that he understood the need for players to take time off after a long and stressful season.
‘I think there are players who need a rest after a very long and stressful season,’ Costacurta explained. ‘You have to get to know the two characters well, but I’m not against this type of solution.’
However, Costacurta also suggested that Maignan may not be the right captain for the team, citing the club’s recent issues with punctuality and discipline.
‘A club that gets called out ten times for being late to the pitch means there’s a club, a director, the captain – in this case, Maignan – who’s making this happen, and so it’s not a positive thing,’ Costacurta said.
Costacurta went on to suggest that players like Matteo Gabbia and Luka Modric, who wore the captain’s armband in Maignan’s absence during pre-season, may be more suitable for the role.
‘I would take it away from Maignan and give it to Gabbia and Modric,’ Costacurta said. ‘Absolutely. They are more important examples.’
Costacurta also spoke about the club’s young Italian players, including Torriani, Comotto, and Camarda, who he believes have the potential to shine in the first team.
‘I think they have the chance to play for this Milan club and show what they are,’ Costacurta said. ‘They’re very interesting players.’
While Costacurta’s comments may have sparked some controversy, it’s clear that he is passionate about the club and wants to see it succeed.
Ultimately, the decision to strip Maignan of the captaincy and replace him with a new leader will be up to the club’s coaches and directors.
But one thing is certain – Costacurta’s words will be closely followed by fans and pundits alike as the season unfolds.
In conclusion, while Costacurta defends Maignan’s extended vacation, he also suggests that the French goalkeeper may not be the right man to lead the team. As the season gets underway, Milan fans will be eagerly awaiting the club’s next move.
