De Zerbi Reflects on Maresca Rivalry and Baresi Memories Ahead of Tottenham vs Manchester City

FolioPitch.com – 13 August 2026 | The upcoming match between Tottenham and Manchester City promises to be a thrilling encounter, with both teams boasting impressive squads and experienced coaches. For Roberto De Zerbi, the Tottenham manager, this game holds a special significance, as he prepares to face off against fellow Italian Enzo Maresca, his former friend and teammate from the Milan youth academy. De Zerbi on Maresca rapport for Tottenham vs Manchester City and special Baresi memories will undoubtedly play a crucial role in determining the outcome of this highly anticipated match.

De Zerbi and Maresca’s friendship dates back to their youth days at Milan, where they both trained alongside the legendary Franco Baresi. Baresi, who passed away last month at the age of 66, was a true icon in the world of football, known for his exceptional defensive skills and leadership. De Zerbi recalls Baresi’s influence on him as a young player, saying, ‘He was probably the best defender I ever saw live, along with Maldini.’

As De Zerbi prepares to face Maresca for the first time as head coaches, he acknowledges their rivalry as a special one. ‘We had already met as opponents when he was on Guardiola’s staff, but never I think as head coaches,’ he confessed to Sky Sport Italia. ‘I’m pleased because he is a friend.’ Their friendship, forged in the Milan youth academy, has endured despite their different career paths.

De Zerbi’s own journey to the top has been marked by several twists and turns. He took over as Tottenham manager in March, tasked with steering the team away from relegation. Despite the challenges, De Zerbi has been instrumental in transforming the team’s fortunes, and his efforts have paid off. This season, Tottenham will look to build on their progress, and De Zerbi is confident that they have the talent and determination to succeed.

The Premier League is renowned for its competitiveness, and De Zerbi knows that his team will face stiff competition from Manchester City and other top teams. However, he remains optimistic about their chances, saying, ‘We can’t get ahead of ourselves. We need to create a clear playing style and give a soul to this team.’

As the match between Tottenham and Manchester City approaches, all eyes will be on De Zerbi and Maresca, two men who have come full circle in their careers. Their rivalry, forged in the Milan youth academy, will undoubtedly add an extra layer of excitement to this highly anticipated encounter.

With their respective teams set to face off in the Premier League, De Zerbi and Maresca will be looking to make a statement. Will De Zerbi’s Tottenham be able to overcome Maresca’s Manchester City, or will the Italian coach’s experience and know-how prove too much for the Spurs? Only time will tell.
