Lazio’s Maternal Instincts: Why They Still Want to Sell Celtic Target Matteo Cancellieri

FolioPitch.com – 02 August 2026 | Lazio Still Keen to Sell Celtic Target Despite Complicated Negotiations has been the buzzword in the transfer market, with the Biancocelesti desperate to part ways with Matteo Cancellieri, a player who has failed to live up to his early career promise. The Italian winger, who joined the club in 2022, has been placed on the transfer list, and it seems that Lazio’s management believes it’s the right time to bid adieu to the 22-year-old.

The Background to Cancellieri’s Departure is Intriguing

Lazio started the summer with several players running on expiring contracts, but they’ve already cashed in on Ivan Provedel and Mario Gila. Alessio Romagnoli and Luca Pellegrini could follow suit, while Danilo Cataldi is poised to sign an extension. The Biancocelesti’s priority, however, is to offload Cancellieri, and it’s not hard to see why.

Cancellieri’s Move to Celtic is a ‘Complicated’ Affair

Recent weeks have seen Celtic emerge as the reported frontrunners in the race for the Roman, with West Ham United hot on their heels. However, according to Il Messaggero (via La Lazio Siamo Noi), Cancellieri’s move to Glasgow has become increasingly complicated, leaving Lazio in a tight spot.

Why Cancellieri is Considered Redundant

The source explains that Lazio still prefer to cash in on the player, despite Gustav Isaksen‘s current absence, which could give Gennaro Gattuso second thoughts. The Lazio boss expects to have the Danish winger at his disposal in the coming weeks, as he continues to recover from a groin surgery, while the versatile Tijjani Noslin is being tested on the right wing.

Cancellieri’s Options are Limited

With the winger’s contract expiring in June 2027, this could be Lazio’s last chance to cash in on Cancellieri, so the hierarchy is still hoping to find a solution before the end of the summer. In addition to Celtic and West Ham, the Italian player was also linked with Fiorentina and Olympiacos earlier in the summer, so it remains to be seen whether any of these tracks will materialize this month.
