Lazio Officially Sign Danilho Doekhi on a Free Transfer

FolioPitch.com – 15 July 2026 | Official Lazio Sign Danilho Doekhi on a Free Transfer has been confirmed by the club, as they look to rebuild their defense after selling key center-backs. The Dutch defender arrives on a free transfer from Union Berlin, where he spent four successful seasons in the Bundesliga. The move comes as Lazio undergo a defensive overhaul under head coach Gennaro Gattuso.

Lazio have been in dire need of defensive reinforcement after selling their two most reliable centre-backs, Mario Gila and Alessio Romagnoli, earlier this summer. In recent weeks, 21-year-old Spaniard Sergi Dominguez emerged as the top target. However, while Lazio are still working on an agreement with Dinamo Zagreb for Dominguez, they managed to bring in Doekhi following swift negotiations.

After spending four years at Union Berlin, the 28-year-old became a free agent at the end of June. Therefore, the Biancocelesti only needed to find an accord with the player and his entourage over personal terms and commissions. Doekhi landed in Rome on Monday to finalize his agreement with the club directors. After passing his medical, the Dutchman signed his contract, as confirmed by the note published on the official Lazio website.

The Rotterdam native spent his youth career at the academies of XerxesDZB (2004-2006), Excelsior Rotterdam (2006-2016), and Ajax Amsterdam (2016-2017). In 2018, he joined Vitesse’s first team, and then went on to earn a move to Union Berlin in 2022. During his four years in Germany, he established himself as a stalwart at the back for the Bundesliga side. He also developed a knack for scoring goals, netting 16 times over the past four years, including six last season. This adds an extra dimension to Lazio’s defensive options, as Doekhi is known for his aerial ability and presence in the opponent’s box during set pieces.

The Official Lazio Sign Danilho Doekhi on a Free Transfer is a strategic move to add depth and experience to a backline that has been depleted. With Gattuso looking to implement a more aggressive defensive style, Doekhi’s work rate and tactical awareness make him a valuable addition. His ability to play in a back three or as part of a four-man defense gives Lazio flexibility.

Doekhi’s career path has been marked by steady progression. After impressing at Vitesse, he made the jump to the Bundesliga, where he faced top-level competition week in and week out. His time at Union Berlin saw him become a fan favorite due to his commitment and physical style of play. Now, he brings that same intensity to the Stadio Olimpico.

Lazio fans will be eager to see how Doekhi integrates into the squad. The club’s transfer window activity suggests a clear focus on strengthening the defense, and with the Official Lazio Sign Danilho Doekhi on a Free Transfer, they have secured a proven performer without any transfer fee. This allows the club to allocate resources to other areas, such as the pursuit of Sergi Dominguez or other targets.

In conclusion, the Official Lazio Sign Danilho Doekhi on a Free Transfer marks a significant step in Lazio’s summer rebuild. With his experience and goalscoring record, Doekhi is expected to play a key role in the upcoming season. The Biancocelesti are aiming to compete on multiple fronts, and adding a player of Doekhi’s caliber on a free transfer represents excellent business. As the dust settles on this move, all eyes will be on Gattuso’s defensive setup and whether Doekhi can replicate his Bundesliga form in Serie A.
